BEP, ALT1, SHUNT, and QUESTIONS

I dug out the Installation and Operating intruction for Pachuca's DC monitor, made by BEP, a New Zealand company.  Page 6 contains the circuit diagram shown below.  This diagram can be seen more clearly in the copy of the entire manual at http://webserver.flak.no/vbilder/10128.pdf.  My area of interest is around "ALT 1" at the bottom of the diagram.  That represents the alternator that I disconnected when I removed the Sabb engine.  In that section of the diagram is a shunt.  I am not sure of its function.  Does that rectangle at the left represent a switch panel?  Can interruption of this circuit really isolate the switch panels?  Questions, questions, questions.

  1. A shunt is a device used to measure amperage load, [not voltage]with out a further decrease in amps. I assume there is an amperage gauge on the back side. If wired as indicated should work with Volvo also. This unit is only measuring the one bank??

Volvo system uses twisted wires also. On the engine harness there should be a minimum 12" clearance away from all high amperage sources. It is possible to get electrical magnetic interference, affecting instruments.
