Iridium Satellite Phone

My brother Arnold has ordered an Iridium 9505A satellite telephone with a data kit as well as a USB connector for the trip. Iridium is the only system that gives true world-wide coverage (including the poles). The data kit will allow us to communicate by email.

The Iridium web site is: http://www.iridium.com/

  1. Hi Bob
When you arrive in Esperance to collect Shiraz(ha-ha)I'll never recognise this yacht the amount of work that has taken place! I was amused to read that Arnold is getting an iridium satellite phone. Apparently that is the only type that works well in Cape Arid National Park. Jim has been making inqiries for some time now. Can you apply for a subsidy for the phone?

  2. Hi, Chris,

Yes, we did our research via Google and learned that whereas other systems may give excellent performance they didn't cover every part of the world. Subsidy? I've been so bled white by markups, GST's, exchange rates, surcharges, etc that I hadn't even considered the possibility of a subsidy!
