This blog began in late 2006 with the planning and preparation for a circumnavigation of the world in my 39-foot sail boat Pachuca. It then covered a successful 5-year circumnavigation that ended in April 2013. The blog now covers life with Pachuca back home in Australia.

Stanchion Work
This week I removed the four starboard stanchions and rebedded them with black Sikaflex 295 UV. The second stanchion was leaking pretty badly with the result that one of the shelves in the head would get flooded whenever we got sea or rain water on the deck. Removal of the third stanchion required the removal of the head liner over the book case.
The top photo is a "before" shot of one of the stanchions with two screws removed. The second photo shows the teak base.
In the third photo the teak base is beside its normal position. I scraped the teak bases then washed them in a mixture of water, bleach, and soap. Then I dried them in the sun.
The last photo shows a finished stanchion.
It is unusual to have stanchions fixed on wooded bases rather than directly on the deck. I was tempted to do away with what appeared to be a needless complication but decided that it was safer to restore things as they were.
The starboard side is next. It will be easier because no head liner need be removed and I've got a better idea of how to go about the job.
